Robotic Surgery Q & A

What are robotic surgeries?

Robotic surgeries are minimally invasive surgeries that use computer-guided robotic arms and miniature surgical tools to perform surgeries with precision. Robotic surgeries can involve one or multiple incisions to access the abdominal cavity and pelvis. If the patient is a good candidate, a procedure can be performed with one incision.

Dr. Chen operates the computer and robotic arms to perform the surgery with little damage to surrounding tissues as possible.

What are the benefits of robotic surgery?

Compared to an open surgery, undergoing robotic surgery offers the following benefits:

  • Single incision site
  • Less risk of infection
  • Faster recovery time
  • Less need for anesthesia and pain medication
  • More precise surgery due to the zoom capabilities of the camera and dexterity of the robotic arms

Robotic surgeries can be used for hysterectomies, reversal of tubal ligations, and removal of fibroids, as well as biopsies and removal of endometrial tissue related to infertility.

How is a robotic surgery performed?

Dr. Chen uses the da Vinci® Surgical System, specifically designed for treatment of gynecologic issues. The da Vinci system combines high-level computer technology with dexterous robotic arms and miniature tools for exact visualization and precise control.

During your robotic surgery, Dr. Chen administers general anesthetic to help you relax and prevent pain during your procedure. Once you’re comfortable, he makes a tiny incision in your skin to access the internal structures of your pelvis. He first inserts a thin fiber optic cable connected to the computer screen into the incision site to visualize the area.

Once the area has been visually examined, Dr. Chen uses the robotic arms with miniature tools to access the treatment site and perform the surgery. Using the tools, he completes the surgery precisely and carefully. Then the tools are removed through the same incision and Dr. Chen cleans and closes the surgical site.

As you recover from the anesthesia, Dr. Chen may provide additional pain medication to prevent discomfort. Depending on the type of surgery you received, your recovery may last weeks to a month. You’ll need to rest for the first one to two weeks of recovery and avoid exercise and heavy lifting. Dr. Chen follows up with you throughout your recovery to ensure you’re healing properly.
