Pregnancy Q & A

What is involved in prenatal care?

Prenatal care begins between weeks four through eight of your pregnancy when you see Dr. Chen for your first visit. This first visit includes a thorough medical history and discussion of your overall health and pregnancy.

Dr. Chen may perform an ultrasound to check on your baby and listen to his or her heartbeat – which can be heard around week eight. You’ll also have blood and urine tests to check your iron levels, thyroid hormones, and blood type, and confirm your pregnancy.

What types of prenatal tests are available?

Throughout your pregnancy, you’ll have a number of prenatal screenings and tests spread throughout each trimester. Your weight and blood pressure are checked at each visit. Other tests involve taking samples of your blood and urine. These tests check your:

  • Blood type and Rh factor
  • Iron levels
  • Immune system for infections and STDs
  • Immunity to common diseases, like chickenpox and rubella (German measles)
  • Hormone levels
  • Thyroid function
  • Glucose levels

There are also additional tests that your doctor may recommend, though these are not always required. These tests include:

  • Biophysical profile (BPP)
  • First trimester screen
  • Group B streptococcus infection
  • Maternal serum screen
  • Nonstress test

If Dr. Chen recommends these tests, they can be performed in the office, though some testing may require specific precautions before or afterward – like fasting beforehand or avoiding strenuous activity afterward. Certain genetic screenings tests are optional, and you can ask Dr. Chen if he recommends these tests for you.

How are pregnancy complications managed?

It is possible that pregnancy complications may arise – including gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, and pregnancy loss. In all of these situations, Dr. Chen works with you closely to provide essential medical care and ensure you have the support you need.

Dr. Chen counsels you on lifestyle habits you can adopt to reduce your risk of developing these conditions – including quitting smoking, avoiding drinking alcohol, and eating a nutritious diet. If a pregnancy complication occurs, Dr. Chen provides appropriate treatment and medications, if needed.

Dr. Chen manages high-risk pregnancies — including multiples — and helps you have the healthiest, safest pregnancy possible. Should a pregnancy loss occur, he provides referrals for support and works to identify the cause whenever possible.
