Gynecology Q & A
What is a well-woman exam?
A well-woman exam is a gynecology check-up that includes an update of your medical history, a pelvic exam, and breast exam. Dr. Chen may discuss your menstrual cycle to determine if you have any problems or irregular bleeding.
Your visit may also include a Pap smear – recommended every three to five years for women between the ages of 21-65 – which screens for cervical cancer. During the Pap smear, you’re undressed below the waist and draped with a cloth or gown for modesty. Dr. Chen inserts a speculum to gently open the vagina and gain access to your cervix. He’ll use a long cotton swab to collect a sample of tissue from your cervix.
After the procedure is complete – which takes less than 10 minutes – you can get dressed. Dr. Chen tests the sample for abnormal cellular changes that may indicate an HPV infection or cervical cancer. Depending on your results, Dr. Chen may recommend a follow-up visit, if needed.
How does a gynecologist treat menstrual problems?
If you experience PMS symptoms, painful menstruation, or abnormal bleeding, Dr. Chen discusses your concerns and performs a pelvic exam – and possibly an ultrasound – to identify the potential cause of your symptoms. In some cases, Dr. Chen may find fibroids, ovarian cysts, or polyps that cause painful, heavy, or irregular bleeding. He may recommend medication or surgery to correct these issues and lifestyle modifications to relieve PMS.
Dr. Chen can also provide testing if you’re missing your period – which could be caused by pregnancy or hormonal issues. Most commonly, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) causes irregular menstrual cycles and may make you miss your period. Medications and lifestyle changes can help to regulate your hormones and reduce your symptoms.
Is birth control available?
Yes, Dr. Chen provides all forms of birth control, including pills, patches, and IUDs. If you're finished having children and want permanent pregnancy prevention, he offers surgical treatments, including tubal ligation.
For women who are sexually active, Dr. Chen recommends STD testing, especially before beginning a sexual relationship with a new partner. STD testing often involves a simple blood sample to check for the presence of infection. If you experience symptoms of an STD – including genital warts, foul odor, itching, or abnormal discharge – discuss your symptoms with Dr. Chen immediately. Prescription medications are provided to clear up your infection.
